Insulin Pumps
Insulin pumps are an alternative to multiple daily injections of insulin by syringes and needles. Instead, the insulin pump delivers a single type of rapid-acting insulin in two ways, a “bolus” dose that is pumped right after a meal or to correct a high blood glucose level, and a continuously infused “basal” dose that delivers insulin needed between meals and at night. However, insulin pumps are risky because they cannot continuously monitor a patient’s glucose levels and adjust insulin infusion continuously and accordingly.
