Patient Control Systems
The patient’s control system allows the patient to perform the following functions. We envision the patient to control such functions through a patient-friendly handheld device, which is being simulated here by a Macintosh-based phone simulator software called XCode. When first initializing the patient into the system, the control system allows the patient to enter personal information used by the doctor to identify the patient, information used to determine the patient’s BMI (age, weight, and gender), and the patient’s diabetic severity level. Then the food request button allows the patient to notify medical personnel when he or she is hungry. The IV Disconnect button allows the patient to pause and disconnect from the intravenous device (such as when taking a bathroom or exercise break). Lastly, the Request Medical Personnel button allows the patient to summon the medical personnel, such as when requiring emergency assistance.
