Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Technology: Glucoset™

Picture
Picture
There is yet another important distinguishing feature in our Smart IV Insulin Infusion System that the Glucommander still does not have. Glucommander is based on taking hourly blood glucose level inputs. These inputs are provided by medical personnel typing it into the device after taking the patient’s blood glucose measurements, typically in 60 minute, or 120 minute intervals. The Glucommander has not yet incorporated a way to input blood glucose data on a continuously (per minute, or even a per second basis). Recent innovations, however, have allowed continuous blood glucose monitoring to take place, through devices such as the Glucoset™, a continuous glucose monitoring device developed by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The Glucoset™ sensor consists of a thin optical fiber inserted into a patient’s radial artery with a gel tip. Light travels through the optical fiber toward the gel tip, which contracts and expands depending on the concentration of glucose colliding with the gel tip. Based on the input from the light, the Glucoset™ sensor is able to calculate changes in blood glucose concentrations per second.
